Kakegurui - Compulsive Gambler -, Volume 1 : Kawamoto, Homura, Naomura, Toru: desertcart.in: Books Review: Kakegurui - Compulsive Gambler vol.1 - Kakegurui - Compulsive Gambler has been one amazing revelation. I started reading this manga because I was fascinated by the art but I didn't expect the story to be this good. Story- 8/10 Games. There are plenty of series about games but you won't find one darker than this one. The story is set in this school where your social status, school life, and your whole life is determined by how good you are at gambling. You can play everything, from rock-paper-scissors to something more dangerous like Russian Roulette. If you manage to win you gain respect, other than enormous amounts of money. If you lose you become a "pet", an insignificant student that everyone can bully and it won't be easy to come back being a "human". The villains are the Student Council, a group of students who rule the school and has created the pet system, ruled by the pragmatic Student Council President. The story begins with the male MC losing a game and becoming a pet, until the real MC come and save him, which lead us to the characters. Art - 9/10 Art is stunning. I love the expressions characters make while gambling, in particular Yumeko's "crazy" moments are a pleasure to watch. Characters - 8/10 "Madness" is the key word to describe characters of this series. Starting with Yumeko, the protagonist: she looks like a lovely school girl but she shows her true nature when gambling. She's crazy for gambling and risk, toying with their opponents in order to enjoy the thrill as much as she can. What I like about her is that she's not evil, she's just crazy for the thrill. Watching her suddenly showing this part of her personality out of the blue is amazing. As for the other students they're well developed. The only important male character, Suzui, is a simple guy who starts the series being a pet, being saved by Yumeko and then thanks to her he becomes stronger as the story progress. Mary Saotome is the bully who made Suzui a pet but later become an ally. As for the villains, the student council, basically they're all crazy. Everyone of them has their illness for gambling, some of them reaching crazy level like Midari, and on top of them the Student Council President, a mysterious and feared girl who leads the whole thing. Enjoyment - 9/10 Watching jerks getting owned by our main characters, it’s just too much of a pleasure for me. Overall - 9/10 If you like psychological stories and crazy characters, everything mixed with an interesting story and universe, you won't be disappointed. I highly recommend this to everyone, especially to those who enjoy psychological genre. You will definitely love this from first chapter. The vol.1 arrived in an excellent condition. No complaints Review: Great Quality! - Enjoyed the manga! 9/10 would recommend!

Gambling and manga are a combination I never thought would work. But from the moment that I read the first chapter of "Kakegurui", I was hooked. Why? For several reasons, including great art and a good story. But I'll point out my key three. One, the concept of a school system where your worth is determined by how good you gamble is intriguing, and one that has not been used in manga before, or if it has, it has not been done as well or been released for an English audience. Two, the characters are intriguing, human, and well fleshed out. Obviously my favorite is Yumeko, as the sometimes heroine sometimes crazy gambler that is bringing upset to the school system by challenging both the Student Council members and fellow students. The stakes are high, and as someone who has read the following volumes, the stakes get even higher. But for Yumeko, this is almost her lifeblood. Her reaction to the higher gamble is funny, yet disturbing to watch. Lastly, the heroine doesn't always win! This is something you are seeing more of in manga these days, like the deaths of the magical girls in "Magical Girl Raising Project" or "Magical Girl Apocalypse." But the great thing is that Yumeko reacts to her losses almost the exactly same way she reacts to her wins. You want to know more about her, and I hope eventually down the line we will get her backstory as to the way she is. In the end, one of the best manga of 2017.

I don't quite tend to buy manga as I can read it online (especially the new ones), but I had to get it. Despite my love for the story and characters, the artwork is gorgeous, facial expressions and everything. It could've been the worst story ever and it would've been saved by how beautiful it can look. I could just spend the rest of my day, writing in this review how much I loved the illustrations of it, just felt in love. But I think you already got the point.
