Roman Catholic Proselytism
First, let me say this cannot be a fair review, because I didn't get farther than about ten pages max in it, and then scanned a few pages at the end. Having been a Catholic from infant baptism to age 72 and then, after about a year of discontent, discovering my soul to have been Unitarian Universalist for years, I thought this book might have something to say to me. I hadn't noticed before sending in my request that the publisher was Sheed & Ward, who begin with the assumption that Roman Catholicism is the True Way Sure enough, my overpowering impression is that this book is based on the premise "We Catholics Know It All, and Anybody Else Who Asks Questions Is At Best a Wistful Wannabe Groping Toward Conversion to Our Truth." From the outset, I found it so painfully loaded to the Catholic side, that I saw I would get no solid or well-ordered analyses of the differences between the two religions; and cannot help wondering if the names of the alleged co-authors mask a piece of didactic fiction. (But could the Catholic Church have been losing enough members to Unitarinsm in those years to have made it worth Sheed & Ward's while? Why Unitarian instead of, say Methodist or Fundamentalist Protestant?) I'm glad I got this through a public library and didn't pay any money to find out what it is.
