Gallium Metal 99.99% Pure 40 Grams 4n Even Melt in Your Hand

Great quality and fun to experiment with!
Great price for the quantity. This stuff is a lot of fun to mess around with. Liquefy some gallium and then mix in some indium. The indium will dissolve and allow with the gallium to make a metal that stays in its liquid state down to 4 degrees F.Please note that gallium and its liquid alloys will wet glass, meaning if you put it on glass, it will stick, very well. That's great for making a very reflective, low temperature mirror but not so good if you want to be able to reuse the gallium. Also, it will stain your skin and any sort of porous surface but is easily to wipe off.

Very interesting stuff.
Very interesting and instructional stuff. It does not behave at all like I thought it would. It's not like chocolate or butter in that it will readily create a molten layer where it touches your hand. It is a thermally conductive metal, so the whole volume must reach melting temperature first before any part of it melts. When it does melt, it doesn't get softer and softer like ice cream; it goes from 'hard' to 'as runny as water' - nothing in between. If you let it cool inside the plastic vial it comes in, it will form large gravel-like crystals that rattle around in a sea of mercury-like liquid. This is really the only item that will allow (students, for instance) to experience state transitions of metals first hand.

.
They are in containers. (Comes with two) i had just seriously thought they had sent the stuff in powdered form. I am raising a star, however still no instructions i dont know what the powder stuff is. But gallium does stain the hands grey but will come off with soap and water.

Great deal! great Fun!
Cool stuff, yes it leaves a black residue on your hands but that is completely normal with gallium!

gallium is great, packaging not so much
First, it's true gallium and fairly affordable. So that's a plus. But as far as a gift for the kids:It arrived in a little plastic bottle with a very small opening. Getting it out while it was solid was obviously impossible, and melting it to remove from the bottle was pretty messy. Hot water, then inevitably you mix the hot water and the now-liquid gallium....

Not quite mercury, but close enough!
My son is too young to have experienced the fun of playing with the mercury from a thermometer. This is as close as we could get without being poisoned. Pretty cool stuff. Useless and messy, but fun.

Fun project material. Works like it should.
Purchased for a fun kids project. We enjoyed it. No problems. This metal will melt in hot water and "freeze" at room temperature. Well packaged in sturdy little plastic tubes with caps.

Very Cool but frustrating also stains
This was very cool. It frustrated both my 8 and 11 year old because it takes a long time to melt. You have to hold it for a long time. My 11 year old gave up. I suggested putting it in my front pocket of my jeans but by that point he didn't care. My 8 year old didn't give up and managed to melt it. He thought it was amazing. 20 min of holding tight. However, BEWARE, my son dropped it on the carpet and it formed small balls that stuck to the base of the carpet. When we attempted to clean it up with a towel it just smeared the gray around and now we have a large gray spot on the carpet. I need to work on it again.
