finally! boots!
FINALLY, I found knee high boots that I actually like! yes, I tend to be very picky, but it has been a long hard journey to finding the perfect (or, almost perfect) riding boots. I bought the brown colored boots which are actually lighter in person, having a slight reddish brown tinge so it looks like a darker cognac color, which I love. Also, some boots I'd tried on before tended to taper towards the ankle when seen from the front, but these don't, which is something I prefer. I don't have the skinniest thighs and wearing boots that taper at the ankle and flare out towards the knee just exaggerated my thighs. But these have a straighter silhouette when I wear them. Now, the only issues I have are that the calves are a bit large and they kinda curve out more in the back than other boots i've seen, so there's some space between my calves and the curving part of the boot shaft, but it doesn't look bad at all. And yes, many people are saying that the opening circumference is quite big, and it is. but I have a 13-14 in calf circumference, and the boots don't gape that much; at least, not enough to look ugly. The gap is maybe half an inch to a third inch at most. Also, my feet are on the wide side...probably being a partial barefoot runner contributes to that, and I'm a size 6.5 when it comes to foot length, but I often size up to a 7 because a 6.5 can be tight on the sides. These boots are not so great for people with wide feet. I bought a size 7 and a 6.5 and found that both are a bit snug on the sides of the feet. However, the 7 was too long in the foot and way too big in the shaft, so I kept the 6.5 because they fit much better overall. I'm hoping they will stretch out.

Nice style, roomy in calf, scratches too easily, overall good
I bought this boot in-store in the lovely Dark Natural Leather shade first. I had finally found fairly flat boots that didn't hurt my feet! I have custom orthotics that I needed to fit into a boot with about a 1 inch heel or less. These are good for me. I liked the brown ones so much that I ordered these in Black 2. You'll find a few different black shades online. Black Leather, Black 2, and Black Austin Leather. I haven't seen the other shades in person. I ordered Black 2 because it was cheapest on Prime and seemed a bit more dressy than the Black Leather (from online photos).FIT:The calf is a bit roomy (you may see this in other reviews). I am an average height and slender/athletic build, 5'5, and there is some room but I'm not "swimming" as another reviewer wrote. If you want a boot that really grabs the leg, these are not the ones for you. More room is more breathable though, which I like. The body of the boot is less stiff than my brown ones. Which is alright, just different.LEATHER/WEAR:I sprayed Cole Haan Leather and Suede Protector on the boots before wearing them. Still, these seem to scratch more easily than the brown ones. Nothing major, just light scuff marks that I can probably buff out. I live in Georgia, so I don't have salt stains and snow to worry about.MATERIALS:The zipper seems good quality. However, the soles are wearing out faster than the brown ones. Only had these a few weeks and the heel peeled a bit of rubber already.CONCLUSION:I would buy them again because the price was right ($94.99 with free shipping vs. the $139 at Macy's) and I have trouble finding comfortable boots. But at full price, no I doubt I would buy these ones in Black 2 again (but in dark brown natural leather, I would).

Very Nice Boot
I did a lot of research while I was saving up for a quality pair of leather black riding boots and I kept coming back to this for the price and good reviews. I took other's advice and ordered a size 9 when I would've normally ordered a 9.5 in order to fit shoe inserts. I'm glad I did - they do run big and even a 9 has a bit of room in the toe still with the inserts, though not enough to be considered too big.The reason for 4 stars out of 5 is because I was unsure of them out of the box. They seemed very stiff and in fact rubbed my ankles when I tried them on. I decided to wear them around the house to see how they felt after a few hours - and the leather softened up and didn't rub anymore! I've since worn them with jeans tucked in and they are just as comfortable. I'm glad I didn't immediately send them back.I do have to say, these feel like a really well-made boot and the leather is substantial. I like the upper boot detail and the buckle. I have 15" calves and there is room to spare even when worn over jeans. Very happy with it!

Not impressed with the quality
I'll probably return these. I bought the black Austin leather ones and at first they looked and felt really great - smooth feel, good fit around my ankles and calves, nice structure to them. I'm 5'11", size 10 and have an average body/calf size, and I was wearing skinny jeans when I tried them on. But then, I was finding things that make me think these won't be good long-term boots. Granted, I know I'm not buying top of the line or full grain leather, but I expected more from this brand/price range and I'm thinking these won't even last a couple years. My first concern is the quality of the leather - it seems really thin, and there's a section on the inner calf that has two pieces of leather glued together instead of a natural seam. Looking now, I can see it in the picture. I hadn't noticed it before, and I have a feeling this glued seam would come apart in no time. Then there's the painted edges of the leather buckle straps - this would probably crack and end up looking like fake leather. I n regards to the dye, I rubbed a white t-shirt on them and the t-shirt looks black, so I get the feeling the color would rub off on everything and look faded, only not in that attractively used leather kind of way. Oh, and one more thing, they feel a bit narrow at the ball of the foot. That might resolve itself if I wore them long term and stretched them out, but it wouldn't help that they are likely to fall apart by then. I'm not big into buying shoes on-line, and this is why. You can't inspect it up close and there aren't enough details on-line to make consistent comparisons among the thousands of options.
