The West Point History of the Civil War (1) (The West Point History of Warfare Series)

Probably the very best history of the Civil war ever written.
I have probably read 100 different histories of the civil war, and this is by far the best, most complete, most readable, and enjoyable history of the civil war I have read. Everyone interested in the history of America, the Civil War, politics, and war fare in general can benefit by this eminently readable history of the Civil war. The book covers, the politics, the society, the economics, the societies there were all involved in this awesome battle for the future of America. This book also covers the key personalities of the war and shows their good, bad, and ugly sides. It is hard to imagine the leadership required to wade into battle every day having thousands, even tens of thousands of casualties for 4 years. The complexities of the war where the north was fighting for the survival of the Union and the South for independence, and the complex question of slavery that overshadowed it all. Great read, and I think the publisher for making this volume available to us.

More than meets the eye
Beautiful book filled with excellent historical information regarding the military aspects of the Civil War. This book accompanies an awesome ebook that West Point uses for its students. The ebook is interactive and has more illustrations and maps than the printed book, but almost all the information in the ebook is in the printed version. There is also an iTunes U course that uses the ebook as its text that looks like it could be well worth the time to investigate. I thought the book was a great find, and was doubly pleased to find the extras in the ebook and iTunes course. I am anxious to read more of it.

Very easy to understand
Enjoyed it greatly. It covered the background of the war. A good description of the military aspects of the battles. I thought the book would be technical and hard to understand but it was fairly easy to understand, particularly the maps. The terminology was also easy to understand, no difficult military language. At the end of the book they described reconstruction and how the country was able to pull together to fight the Spanish Amercian War and later World War I. The book summed it all up very conveniently.

Deserves a Rebel Yell or a Yankee "Hurrah!"
James Miller has already written an excellent review of this amazing book. I'd just add that if you're a devotee of the West Point Atlas of the Civil War (and who isn't?), you'll find the maps within this new history to be delightful in a way that even our beloved old atlas is not: the maps in this one are in color. Additionally, there are full-color paintings, some you may recognize from Life Magazine's superb old centennial issues of 1961. The editors have done every Civil War buff a huge favor with the release of this magnificent volume.

For knowledgeable and novice Civil War history buffs
Well written, thorough and easy to read. Provides an authoritative account of America’s great internal conflict. Highly recommended for readers with little or a lot of Civil war knowledge.

How the union was preserved.
This must be the best and most complete volume available. Excellent for guided or individual study. Personalities are treated as importantly as are strategy and tactics . Maps are used judiciously.

Probably not a book for those that do not have ...
Probably not a book for those that do not have an educated back ground of Civil War history. It is a well researched and edited book that will be a must have for Civil War historians. It is the kind of book one will go back to for reference and will probably want to seek out a hard back copy .
