This book is a cornucopia of recipes. It's intended use, as stated by the author, is to encourage modern Egyptians to cook their own meals rather than buy convenience meals at the store. I can relate to that goal. I am often stunned at how ignorant my fellow countrymen, not Egyptians I might add, are of cooking everyday meals. But I digress. Open this cookbook to any page and you will see at least one color photograph of food that you might prepare. Often there are multiple variations on a recipe, so that after making the main recipe you can make more than one final version. There are a few pages of history, but this isn't really about history. One of the recipes is for spaghetti with tomato sauce, so you can see that it is meant to be a working cookbook for someone living in Egypt. Most of the recipes are recognizably Egyptian in nature, however, so don't think that the book is just a homogenized collection of modern American/European cooking.The book also contains chapters on necessary equipment for a kitchen, descriptions of food and spices, and advice on buying produce. The chapter on poultry, for instance, gives advice on buying your live fowl. Obviously that isn't an option in many places, but it is relevant in Egypt so it is in the book. I guess I would most liken it to the good old Better Homes and Gardens recipe book that so many of my countrymen were given on setting up their own households, years ago. Only in this case, it is a household in Cairo or some other Egyptian city.While I seriously doubt I'll ever get the chance to try making fried bull testicles or lamb's throat, I am looking forward to trying out a lot of these recipes. I've already tested one recipe against a recipe for the same dish in another Egyptian cookbook, and this one was much better.

This book offers some interesting food recipes and information about Egyptian cooking

I purchased this book and was pleased at the numerous selections of recipes to try. Some pictures made me a little nauseous, but this is the culture of the food...different from what we eat. I look forward to trying many of the recipes for my Egyptian boyfriend and myself.

I married an Egyptian and learned a few dishes from his amazing mother. However, I really wanted a reference to remember the dishes I cooked and also learn a few new ones. This book is truly amazing and has everything you need. The measurements are not US friendly but that is an easy fix. Only problem, now that my husband knows I have it I have no excuse to not cook what he wants for dinner :/

My husband is Egyptian and I was looking for a long time for the most authentic easy to follow book with pictures - I found one! This book has the best Egyptian meals ever, my husband says that my cooking tastes even better than in Egyptian restaurants and ingredients and methods are just amazingly right and easy to follow. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to taste a true Egyptian cuisine, great collection, excellent pictures and perfectly correct recipes.

I live on a farm in Egypt and love the Egyptian country cooking. This encompasses a lot more than the items that are usually found in Egyptian cookbooks and this is the first cookbook I've found that covers recipes for the most down home items in a village repetoire. There are recipes here that my Egyptian friends don't know. I have a copy of this book and have bought it for friends here in Egypt and abroad. Wonderful book.

I retirned this book because it was missing the last 80+ pages. Beware.

good reading

I've been wanting to learn how to cook egyptian food for a while now but never got the chance. Everytime I would visit Alexandria I would go crazy over my late mother in laws food it was simply amazing. My husband wasn't convinced about this book but once he read through the recipes he was so happy that I could make him all his mums favorite dishes. This book is 5stars because it allows us both to enjoy all the food mama would make for the family. Thank you so much for the pictures and the step by step guidance. If there is another edition I'm going to definately buy it. Sam x

This book is quite authentic. Its a no frills cookbook that has alot of Egyptian recipes with photos that sometimes lack glamour, nonetheless its the real deal this is what Egyptians would eat at home. Im only giving 4 stars as i had an issue with the initial copy of the book that i received resulting in them having to issue another copy.
