Informative Reader, great for elementary students
A fact-filled, informative primer for young readers. Perfect for kids just starting to read who already know a little about Greek mythology. The illustrations are not the finest; they're actually quite disturbing. Faces are fuzzy and inexpressive, although I did like that the gods were depicted with racial ambiguity and didn't look all blonde and blue-eyed like they do in so many of the other books. The amateurish drawings are made up for, though, in the ample inclusion of actual photographs, maps and images of artifacts that lend to the historicity of the book. Gives a basic intro to ancient Greece then skims over some of the classic stories in a few pages each: Family of Greek gods, Pandora's jar, Labors of Heracles, Theseus and the Minotaur, The fall of Icarus, the Adventures of Perseus, the Foolishness of Midas, and Orpheus and Eurydice. Some gruesome illustrations, and a few frightening ones (a nasty Cerberus, scary Gorgons, Pegasus rising from a beheaded Medusa). If your child is sensitive to such images or unfamiliar with these stories, you might want to give warning or choose a less graphic book, but this one is fairly tame as far as Greek myths go. My five-year-old loves it. Also worth noting: the edition I received did not have the cover pictured here. It has an illustration of Zeus (who looks a hundred years old) looking down over some of the other gods - pictured with their totem objects - on his throne at Mount Olympus.

Not bad
Realizing that this is a leveled reader and Greek mythology isn't an easy subject I wasn't expecting it to be fantastic. But I felt that then writing was a bit chaotic. It's was hard for me as a parent to follow easily. The stories we ok and not gory or overly detailed (I was pre-reading because depending on who telling the tale the stories may not be age appropriate for my 6 yr old daughter) but I had no reason to worry here. Nothing I would worry about. The "goriest" things were The "Gods" killing mythical creatures. And let's be honest, if you are reading Greek mythology you have to expect that right? Loved the glossary list at the back. Nice touch.

Beware of the Minotaur- he needs some clothes.
I ordered three copies of this book for my fourth grade classroom, as we are studying different types of genre. I decided to read through one to see what myths were included- I'm glad I did, because on page 28, there is an illustration of Theseus and the Minotaur, featuring the Minotaur with much too graphic nudity for an elementary classroom. Fortunately, I was able to sharpie some black briefs on him, but really? Who proofs these books?Other than that, my students have enjoyed the book.

good for a seven year old
My 7 year old granddaughter took right to it even though she already had some familiarity with mythological names and characters. The illustrations are definitely not beautifully drawn but the book held her attention anyway.

Four Stars
Greek myths were accessible to my ELL students, entertaining and accurate enough for adult readers too.

Good reader but may not be appropriate for all children
My niece loved the book but her Mom, my sister-in-law, was not as thrilled. She felt there were some parts of the myths that were "too adult" for the intended age group.
