Great set! Read on for in depth review.
Hey all just wanted to come in and leave a review on this fantastic train set, now first off all the reviews that are one or two stars are way off at least in my opinion. For the price this is probably the best HO scale train set on amazon it seems that others have had a derailing problem now I have run this for roughly an hour give or take a few minutes and have had absolutely no problem with it she runs like a dream and this is with the track on carpet no less. Now if you have carpet that is rather fluffy then it may have an issue or two but the nice weight of the locomotive really helps to keep it on the tracks a nice solid surface is recommended such as a hard wood floor or table. The locomotive is a 4-8-4 Niagra but it's sort of a "mutt" in that it is not an exact Niagra but a mix if that and another loco I can't figure out. The pulling power is great and the NINE! yes nine cars are easily pulled by this beast of an engine. The loco features all metal wheels that is for the pilot wheels, drivers and trailing wheels as well as metal piston rods this is all rounded out nicely with the smoke unit and headlight that function very well. The paint is exceptional with no bleed lines everything is crisp and easy to read this goes for the rolling stock as well as the engine and tender. When assembled the entire train is roughly in the 5.5ft range and so a good bit of track is provided the measurements for the size of the oval should be in the description just below the images so I won't record its size here. Now for every up there is a down and that is the case with this set the loco features two very small square holes near the cylinders on either side of the locomotive that when given enough smoke fluid will leak this is not a huge problem as you shouldn't put more than 6-10 drops of fluid in the smoke stack at any given time even then it may leak so be aware of this. Another small issue I came across was two or three pieces of track needed to have the rail joiners bent so that the track would go together this issue is very easy to fix as you just get a small screwdriver or tweezers and just pry it outward but don't go He Man on it just pry slightly and it will be fixed in no time flat. In conclusion this train set is a great addition either as a take apart put back together set or as a more permanent setup either way I find it to be a fantastic product though Bachmann never disappoints. -side notes: I would replace the plastic wheels on the tender and freight cars with metal ones as plastic picks up grime much faster than plastic. I would also try to find a way to close the square holes on the sides of the boiler to keep the smoke fluid from leaking onto your rails and wheels.

Great train!
The train has really worked well for me. I have noticed some people with poor reviews saying that the train was derailing often. I have discovered that the train works best when the track is laid out on hard surfaces and floors. Hardwood floors work great in my house, and I've never had it come off the track once so far. However, when I set it up on soft carpet in my basement, I started to have issues. I could not get it around more than once or twice before it would derail and come off the tracks. After studying it for a few hours I figured out and solved the problem. The small, swiveling guide wheels in the front and back of the locomotive were the derailing culprits. But they were causing the train problems because of it's overall weight. The locomotive is so heavy that when it's going across a joint between two sections of track, especially in curves, the track sinks into the carpet causing an uneven rail surface. This is making some wheels lose contact with the rails while others are still on it. When they try to regain contact they don't always go back on straight and then cause a derailment.I was able to somewhat solve the problem by supporting the track with pieces of cardboard. By having the cardboard under the track, it spreads the weight out more and then the track doesn't sink down so much. Started by putting cardboard under the worst spots for derailment, but ended up putting it under about half of the track.Great train overall-smokes well after you've "warmed" up the locomotive for a bit and then adding oil and running the train 2/3-3/4 speed.Definitely recommend setting it up on a hard surface - hard flooring or a very, very large table. I was also able to run it on 18" radius curves without too much trouble.

A little trouble but nice train set in all honesty!!!
I bought this for my handicapped uncle whom is 67 and he has a train platform that I built him that is massive. But I showed him this set and he loved it so we got it. The engine is very...touchy as in if the track is off a tiny bit and I mean tiny, this engine will jump or come off the rails fast. The coupler in the back sits too high to link up with some of the cars it comes with but Built nicely in some places and just touchy train. Issue with the cars, they will not stay hooked, little metal.or plastic rod holding the couplers together if not looked at right from the box and sat right on a few pieces of track to make sure it will not catch then it will cause them too catch on the track and bust or derail your set. Has happened straight from.the open up and lay it's track down to run. It's has broken couplers and the one on the engine and caused other damage too it.I am not giving a bad review just saying what happens and I'll fix it my self no worries. It's a nice set just should know what one is doing when buying this train or train set. It is a nice set and power and track was outstanding besides some engine and car issues it's oka.
