This book is packed with information – it’s definitely a must-have for every makeup artist’s library (including special fx makeup). It’s easy to read and understand and thoroughly explains how you see and use color. The lighting section was really helpful, too, and the accompanying graphics are an added bonus. Middleton has done a great job researching, writing, and illustrating (including some of her own work).

A good resource for understanding color theory as it relates to makeup application
As a professional makeup artist and educator, I'm glad to know that there is a resource like this for students of the profession. Chapter 1 covers all the aspects of color - classification, relationships, attributes, mixing, color systems (e.g. RYB, RGB and CMY) and optical illusions in color, which can be helpful for professionals attempting to make color choices in their makeups. There is some confusion in this chapter because in most cases, the author doesn't reference her figures (illustrations, charts, paintings, photos) in the text, so the scholarly practice of labeling these visual resources falls short. For example, the reader would be hard-pressed to truly understand what the Munsell Color System looks like or how it works because there is no visual reference. The author adds a layer of credibility because she is a fine artist, and the references to color used in painting feeds the imagination of the reader. The remaining chapters all offer something for the aspiring and even the seasoned makeup professional. I do hope that in the next edition, that some of these minor technical problems will be solved, and what will remain is a really terrific resource.

A definitive book on the subject
I highly recommend this book for anyone study color, especially if you're using color in the beauty industry and as a makeup artist. Traditional color theory is not quite enough nor the same for makeup application and this book makes it clear and helps you to understand how to use color theory to work better.

Color Theory for Every One Highly Recommended Book.
This book isn't just for make up artists. All of us can learn something about color theory in a way to that relates to the world around us, because of the care with which Katie wrote this and the impeccably selected illustrations. If only all authors and experts put as much care into their books as Ms. Middleton put into this one. Not just for make up artists!
