Tremendous resource for anyone starting an orchard
I have been planting a new orchard on our farm and wanted to plant some more unusual, heirloom varieties to diversify. This book is a great resource to get an idea of what to expect with a variety I am not familiar with.

Very detailed. Could have included some pictures and references to help identify the apple variety. I have a apple that has a green/grey skin and the pulp is rippled with pink and the riper the apple the more defined the pink. The flavor is that of a Granny Smith or similar. Great with another apple in making Sauce and it turns the sauce red.Good Book

Far more than just another book of apple varieties
So many apple varieties to try and so little time. Great deal of information on history and agri"culture" of apples. Would like to see an appendix of common apple varieties specific to countries and States.

"Apples" found wanting
The first half of "The New Book of Apples" provides a very fine overview of the origin, history, and uses of apples. However, the second half, the Directory of Apples is such a bare-bones overview of most species - except the best known - as to be of minimal worth, and some species that I enjoyed this summer are missing entirely. This latter section needs to be at least doubled in quantity and quality of information. Truly disappointing after a good start.

Virtually everything you ever wanted to know about Apples, and beautifully illustrated.
I bought Taylor's book on English Apples not long ago, and this is its natural complement - not that I really need to know about apples from all over the World, but it's fascinating nonetheless, as is the historico-geographical section. A handsome book for the shelf, and a compendium of everything from recipes for Apple Chutney to how and when to prune, and lists of pests and the symptoms of their baleful presence. Well indexed and with copious references and good Bibliography.

I bought this book as a present for my son in law, who now has a very large garden and an interest in growing fruit. The book was recommended to me by a friend who works at the Brogdale Fruit Collection. It has many attractive illustrations and I think would appeal to those with a more academic interest in fruit as well as those who just enjoy beautiful books.

A valuable reference
I am very interested in heritage varieties of apple and this excellent book contains authoritative information that is not available from an internet search. A very useful book for a professional or fruit enthusiast. Having the book available in a kindle edition is an added bonus as I no longer have the shelf space for new books.

Review of 'The New Book of Apples' by gb-online.co.uk
A very concise listing by Brogdale, of all types of apples grown in the UK. With excellent descriptions and notes. For the price a must for your library shelf. As I grow fruit rootstocks (gb-online.co.uk) and I collect old varieties of fruit, this is an asset.
