D Dalla Terra Truffle Salt 5%, 3.5-Ounce

First of all, I am not a picky eater. I love foods that many people find revolting, such as sardines, anchovies, brussels sprouts and all vegetables. I am an adventurous eater and take pleasure in trying new and different foods and different ethnic foods. I love salt and different types of salt. I really liked summer truffles when I had them in a cream-based pasta a few years ago. I cook every day and love cooking different types of foods. So, I was looking very forward to trying this product. Especially since it had received such glowing reviews. As soon as I opened up the jar, a volatile odor hit me in the face. It did not smell like truffles at all. I thought that I should taste it, thinking that it had to taste better than it smelled. Wrong. It tasted as bad as it smelled. I kept opening up the jar throughout the evening and tasting a few grains each time, just to see if my opinion had changed. It hadn't. The following day, I steamed some fresh green beans and thought that maybe, just maybe, the salt would somehow taste different when prepared with food. I tried it on the green beans. Awful. Horrid. Then it hit me what it smells like. It smells like turpentine. Upon reading the ingredients, I noticed that the final ingredient is "flavoring". I am not certain exactly what type of flavoring that is and if that is what I am smelling and tasting that is so fetid. It has an overwhelming chemical aroma and taste. Since this is the first time I have tried truffle salt, I am wondering if this is one of the few foods out there that I truly can't stand or if I received a "bad" jar.

I purchased this as a gift, so I cannot tell you exactly how it tastes. However, it had an extremely powerful odor so I am just going to assume that it had a lot of real truffle flavor. The jar appeared to be sealed properly, but the odor still got out. Since I was giving this as a Christmas gift I didn't want my whole pile of Christmas goodies to smell like yummy black truffle, so I ended up vacuum-sealing this item in heavy duty plastic. That did the trick.

I can only give this a 5-star review. Sure it's expensive, but the aroma and taste of this salt is amazing, and happily stronger than I expected. I recently bought a truffle oil that had hardly any aroma at all and was very disappointed. Just a pinch of this salt fills your dish with complexity and depth. It's amazing what just a little pinch will do in an omelet, or on top of sautéed vegetables. Right after I submit this review i'm going to buy a 2nd one as a gift for a friend.

We put this on everything. Very strong truffle scent and flavor, unlike some competitors. I’d love to try some other brands, but too afraid to gamble, so been sticking with this for a few years so far. Many repurchases. Not cheap, but what do you expect with truffles?

Not sure why this is labeled as 10% truffle salt. The container clearly says it is 5%. Smell is very pungent. Not sure the strong aroma directly translates into truffle flavor though. The jury is still out on this one for me. Have to try it a few more times before I can decide whether it's worth it or not.

I love this stuff so much that I carry a small jar of it everywhere I go. I have purchased others brands in the past and prefer D Dalla Terra. I am very pleased with the intensity of the flavor.

Decent truffle flavor and aroma but nothing exceptional. If you are price comparing and this has the best price, you won't be disappointed, but there is no reason to pay a higher price for it.
