Baraka: Remastered [Blu-ray] [1992]

The best High Definition transfer to date. Bar none.
I was lucky enough to see this wonderful piece of work in advance, and viewed it on a Samsung 100hz 1080p TV through a PS3. It is, without doubt, the best image I have ever seen on a TV screen of any sort. To date, I would say Blade Runner is the best transfer from a non-digital source, and that was shot on 35mm and scanned in at 4K resolution, which is a far "finer" definition than can be displayed on domestic television sets at present. Well, Baraka was shot on 70mm, and has been scanned in at 8K, and the result is absolutely knock-out.When I first moved to HD, I was hoping that Baraka would get the treatment it so rightly deserves, but knowing the high costs involved, I thought it would never happen. Well, obviously someone out there has deemed it worthy of that cost, and I can only thank them for it.If you haven't seen Baraka but are interested in seeing it, you really should pick up a copy. It's the perfect demonstration of HD, although that is secondary to the work done by Ron Fricke and his crew.If you're already familiar with Baraka and wondering simply whether this is a Blu-ray worth picking up, please, take my word for it, it'll be a while before this is beaten. I just hope you have TV with the specs needed to really get the best out of it.

A wonderful Surprise
Its not at all what I expected but its one of the most fascinating and beautiful things I've ever seen. Its not a film with a story, nor is it a travelogue, even though it takes you from the top of mount Everest to High Street Tokyo via Africa, Asia and South America. You have to sit down, relax and just watch the most amazing scenery in the most wonderful quality images. Sound quality (pretty much just electronic music) is wonderful. The whole thing really exercises your system and shows what it can do.There is not much explanation as to the purpose of the film and it challenges you to understand what it is trying to tell you whilst challenging you to find out just where you are in the constantly changing world. Its geography, ethnography, photography, and philosophy, all rolled into a package which is just a great way to while away time. Why it is such an unknown treasure is surprising and sad. Give it a try.

This is what BluRay and hi-def was made for...
I must confess, I didn't really totally 'get' this film when I watched it on DVD. Shame on me, but moderately excusable on a film where pure visual imapact is such an important component of the total experience. On BluRay and a high-end A/V system with 50 inch Kuro monitor, the entire experience is transformed. Image quality from from a hand-built and computer-controlled 70mm film camera with Zeiss lenses and state-of-the-art digital conversion can only be described as eyeball-popping. For pure visual imagery of the world around us, this is up there with 'Planet Earth'- and I think even shades that as a total audio/visual experience.Immersive visuals turn this into a 90- minute poem on humanity and spiritualty. Also a great film if you're into meditation...This may sound a bit pretentious, but watch it if you don't believe me.As a photographer, moreover, one can only admire - and occasionally drop your jaw - at what Ron Fricke, the cinematographer, has achieved here.Buy it.

Baraka Never Looked Better- Unbelievable picture quality
I have the DVD version of Baraka and it was my favourite relaxation disk. I upgraded to bluray on a whim, I did not think that the picture quality will be that much improved. I am glad to say that I way mistaken. The picture and sound quality will fool you into thinking that this was filmed in 2012 and not in 1992. I cannot believe my eyes and ears. This is a demo worthy material and if you have proper setup gear, you can use this to demonstrate what your setup can do.One thing that I did not know until I watched the special features on this disk, is that the original Baraka was filed in 65mm film. For the Bluray release, the original 65mm was re-scanned. This is the reason for the reference picture quality.Highly recommended.

Excellent movie!
The movie shows the cultural life around the world with beatiful scenes of people and nature in coherence and "modern" people who are often disconnected (mind occupied mostly of physical life). Mostly physical (material) poverty in the poor regions and often spiritual poverty in the rich regions (less connection with their heart AND mind). We have so much resources (there is difference between resources and resources) so we could all share with each other. The are so much knowledge (there is also difference between knowledge and knowledge) to listen to and learn from.I recommend this.

... Ray release is without a doubt the most jaw-droppingly beautiful version I have seen
Not sure if it's the 4k upscanning of my TV but I have watched this in various formats and THIS specific Blu Ray release is without a doubt the most jaw-droppingly beautiful version I have seen..I love this movie, outside of the slightly dated Qatsi trilogy (Koyaanistqatsi being the stand out) there is little quite like it..There are similar movies but the Qatsi Trilogy, along with Baraka and the more recent but less poignant Samsara, stand as benchmarks, not only for their genre but also for testing your home equipment..You will struggle to find a better audio/visual feast for your tech than what is on display here..

Great in HD
Interesting DVD, wasnt sure what to expect apart from what other reviewers had said. Images and views are excellent with an interesting spin on life and lives around this planet, some quite spectacular. Not for everyone l guess but if l am being honest had l seen extracts from the DVD would probably not bought it. Comes down to personal choice l guess.

One of my top 10 Movies
This has to be one of the best movies to come to BluRay. I cant wait to see this in High Def. Lets hope the transfer is as good as they say. If I didn't have a Bluray player I would go out and buy one just to see this in highDef, it is that good. If you have never seen it and are thinking of buying a copy, I couldn't recommend it enough. Lets hope the rest of his movies make it to high def too. Brilliant, reserved my copy already.

Before purchasing the remastered version make sure your blue ray player supports region B or this disk will not work!!!!. You can get the regular Baraka blue ray version. Its the same as the remastered.
