Solve A Crime (Using Maths) Paperback – 19 Aug 2004

I love these books because they offer an opportunity to see how maths knowledge can have a place in real world scenarios, even if they can be a bit simplistic. Also there are different levels of maths problems and there is an emphasis on understanding the information you are given to be able to come to a correct solution. They do not generally tell you how to reach your solution, so it leaves scope for flexibility in number manipulation and inventiveness when coming to a solution. The other thing I like about these books is that they are not about pointless repetition. There are not pages of sums to practice what you have learnt; but as each problem is solved the student moves on to new type of issue which a solution needs to be found for. You may have to use knowledge that you gained from a previous problem or you may have to find completely different ways of solving the next problem. These books are great for reluctant maths students

My fairly unmotivated class (very small class) loved doing this work. It really made them think about maths in the real world and they ended up working at a much higher level that they usually would as the didn't realise they were doing Maths. Brilliant!

I only ended up paying 50p for this so can't complain but I wanted to use it for class teaching but it is one crime to solve. I was hoping for several independent ones. Each problem gives lots of facts about general crime solving and is spread across a double page spread. The Maths is quite challenging and probably about right for my age group 11year olds.

I have a group of around 15 Adult Numeracy Learners and decided to try this with them as they were getting bored of all the normal stuff. I have never seen them so interested in a project! They loved it and at the same time did not realise that they were actually doing Maths! It wasn't until we reviewed it they realised that they had just worked out all the maths problems based on products, shapes, fractions, decimals, calculating costs, scale, code breakers and maps. BRILLIANT will definately be using this again!

Like the 'space' version this is a fun and engaging maths resource that can be used as a stand alone activity (great for 'emergency' supply moments) or with with planned numeracy strategy work. Would highly recommend.
