Wally Wood: Eerie Tales of Crime & Horror

There were a few companies that did far better work than this but that was the exception
I believe that the perceptions and expectations that you have before purchase will shape how you receive this book. The art and colors appear to represent the time period. I have had in the past some comics from the thirties forties and fifties. For many studios and production of the period were far cruder than today. If you have a hard time accepting that then this book may not be for you.As some have said there are many others who contributed to these stories. Wood only contributed the pencils as far as I know. Someone else did the inking the lettering and the stories probably. At that time many people were not credited for work but paid by the page etc. There were a few companies that did far better work than this but that was the exception. I enjoy these because they look like the originals like someone else said without the fragile yellowed pages. The production quality is representative of the time and if I couldn't accept that I feel like I would need to get a newer grapic novel post 70's. I like it this way reminds me of the older issues I used to own.

Why So Many Complaints?
I just received this book, purchased here on Amazon, used, and was a little worried what I was going to see when I flipped through it. I had read a number of negative comments about the poor printing quality and such, so I was expecting to find a real mess.BUT WAIT!The printing is just fine! It is in color, similar (I guess) to what it looked like originally in the comic books, but cleaner and without yellowed paper or dust mites. Really, not too bad at all! I was very pleased I bought the book! So, as long as you are an average guy or gal who does not expect super high quality reproduction in what is obviously NOT a high-class coffee table art book, and a fan of early comic book horror stories from around the very early 1950's, I suggest you buy this and check out some early Wally Wood.Good stuff, and pretty decent print quality, as well.

For the hard-core Wood fan
Make no mistake, I'm happy to have this - because I am a pretty hard-core Wood fan. The cover and some of the artwork near the end of the book (which is arranged chronologically) is pretty awesome. But the majority of the book is sub-standard work - often uncredited. My guess here is that the Wood estate only has the right to reprint stories out of copyright - and I'm sure EC and the other major players have maintained theirs - so most of this is the earliest work he did, saddled to poorly-written stories (more Crime than Horror), and virtually unrecognizable as Wood artwork, whose signature style took a while to develop, apparently.

Some great stuff encasing some bland filler.
Very early Wood. His style is often buried by the inker. Or maybe it was the times of the publication. In any case the material is impossible to find so it is worth having for a fan/collector. But the book did not live up to the promise of the cover for me.

Disappointing scans.
This scans in this book are awful. Roughly half the stories are blurry and out of focus, and the lines in some of them seem pixelated like when you blow up a low resolution picture. The material is decent, and I gave it two stars just for the Fu Manchu books and the rarity of the material here, but the book itself is not worth the money. The scans aren't all terrible, but the ones that are look like something you could print off your home printer, which is unforgivable to me.

Poor production from Vanguard
I'm not adding much that previous reviewers haven't already said. Most of this book is murky, Photoshopped comic page scans that somehow are simultaneously too blurry and over-sharpened. Sure, some of these stories are tough to find, but the Atlas one--which is easily the most common--is the worst one of the lot. I'm certain Vanguard simply scoured the web for this material in order to slap this book together. For a book purporting to pay homage to Wood's fine linework, they couldn't have done him a bigger disservice.

OK, not brilliant
This is a lot of early work from the great Wally Wood and the stories are definitely not the quality of the EC work but still the book is pretty decent and if you are a mega fan of his work then this is a must have. Decent scans of the original books - so all fine.

Enjoyable if your a fan of wally woods work
I bought after reading about wally wood and his work for EC comics. This is early work from the man and shows his style not yet developed but getting there. Still an enjoyable read
