This is a terrific beginner microscope for kids and young adults. With 3 objective lenses, and 2 eyepieces, you can use 5 magnification levels from 40X to 1000X. Even better, the included 0.3MP digital eyepiece lets you watch everything on your computer! The included software can take photos and record video. You can edit the images using professional tools. The magnification range is ideal for viewing microscopic organisms, like what you might find in water samples from a lake or ocean. It's also great for looking at crystal structures and metallurgical samples. The top and bottom LED illumination provide light for both translucent and opaque objects. This means you can look at ultra-thin tissue samples, or plant leaves and insects. And since the microscope is battery-powered, you can take it anywhere. The easy-to-use controls guarantee that anyone can get the hang of using the microscope in no time. The 3-lens turret can switch between the 4X, 10X, and 40X objective lenses by simply rotating. The specimen-stage has two clips to hold a slide or other object in place, while focus is adjusted by turning the large knob on either side of the microscope. A switch on the back will select the top light for opaque objects, or bottom light for translucent ones. An aperture wheel under the stage can be rotated to change the focus of the bottom light, which can increase or decrease the detail in the specimen. This kit includes 5 prepared slides, as well as a collection of tools for making your own slides. There's a Petri dish for holding liquid samples, and 5 blank slides and cover slips for mounting thin-section specimens, like tissues. There's an easy-to-use microtome for slicing specimens, and red and blue stains to improve contrast in highly-translucent specimens. A vial, stirring rod, and pipette will help prepare wet-mount slides. And, of course, there are tweezers to help with the more-delicate subjects.

Chose this for the extra features, totally worth it!
We've only had it two days, but we've had so much fun with this microscope already! I chose this particular model for two reasons. One, it has a top light, which most microscopes don't have. This allows us to look at solid things like feathers, leaves, and bugs, without them needing to be thin enough to see through. That was a big frustration for us with our old microscope - when you are homeschooling four kids, they want to be able to look at random things they find! The other feature I really wanted was the ability to connect a camera lens and view the slides on the computer. I'm not super tech savvy and I was going to have my husband set up this feature for me, but I decided to plug it in and see what I could do. To my surprise it was super simple (it LOOKS complicated at first, but I promise it's easy!). You just plug in the USB, download the app, and click on the camera name. There's a user guide on the CD that explains it all but I didn't need it. Having the slides on the screen makes it so easy for my kids and I to see at the same time; we're not taking turns with the eyepiece and having to constantly readjust when it gets bumped or isn't focused right for one person. I can also point to exactly what I want them to look at, rather than trying to explain it as they're looking through the eyepiece and hope they're looking at the right thing. I couldn't believe how clear the screen picture was! I guess I expected it to be kind of blurry or something. And if you want to take a picture or video of what you're looking at, you just click a button. It also keeps your eyes from hurting from trying to look in the eyepiece for long periods of time! Closing one eye at a time is not easy for little ones. This camera lens is seriously just the best feature. One last thing I love is the five slides and the Usborne book that come with it. (Any homeschooler knows that Usborne books are top-notch.) It has full explanations of all the microscope parts (which came in handy because I had no idea what the little round black thing was! Turns out you can cut your own thin sections of plants, etc. to put on a slide). The book also has directions on how to make your own slides, and simple first microscope "projects". The book and slides made it so easy to just jump right in, even though I was intimidated at first. The kids have loved looking at all the slides this week (and I love that there are materials provided to make our own)... but I admit I sat here looking at everything I could find long after the kids lost interest. :) Highly recommend this microscope set!

Perfect for scientist!
Works great, my daughter was very satisfied. Loved how she can connect to her computer with easy viewing. Now my little scientist can look at all sorts of things.
