Smooth w/ gentle grit. Wonderful grit adds mouth feel. Slightly creamy, bite but not bitter
"Chocolate With True Grit. We use traditional Mexican stone mills, called molinos, to grind our cacao. The hand-carved stones that turn inside these mills preserve the bright, fruity flavors of the beans, and create a chocolate that's bold, rustic, and satisfyingly gritty -- unlike any other chocolate you've tasted" I flipping LOVE this "Super Dark" chocolate (85%). I adore the slight grit. It adds to the sensory experience. It IS satisfying. It isn't jarring to me at all. I'm in love. Think this is my new favorite for 85% cocoa because of the texture. It is just awesome (to me). This is my first time trying Taza chocolate. I am new to purposely eating dark chocolate. I dont know if my tastebuds have changed or if I was just trying the wrong stuff, but recently I have tried some very good dark chocolate, and I am preferring it over milk chocolate. It isnt as cloying. I find I can eat a little and be happy. I know it is healthier, which is a huge bonus. Pretty sure prior experience with dark chocolate was just HersheysSpecialDark, and so yeh.. when I decided to try dark chocolate again, I went for more premium brands (at premium prices). This is very good tasting to me. Has a bite, but not bitter. Just enough creaminess to lend a good mouth feel. The grit factor really adds a lot to the experience for me. Each packed round has 2 disks inside. Pack of 12 equates to 24 discs. Score marks allow for easy breaking off of pieces. I like that I can savor a slice at a time. I have not done anything else with it other than to eat it directly.

Yes!!!!
Although it's more expensive than the "big" brands, these guys haven't been poisoning their customers with lead... unlike those "big" guys. They also do their best to avoid enslavement of people for financial gain. Again, unlike some other larger companies. Best of all, they have high quality chocolate! It's so yummy, you can truly taste the vanilla, which is something I never thought of while eating cheap chocolate we use for s'mores!! None of that vomit taste you get from the PA company!! Just pure good good, all day. Errrry day!!

A little pricey but very nice quality chocolate
This chocolate tastes really good. I love the stone ground texture. It definitely has a quality taste to it, but the flavors are all pretty faint and don't come through as strong as I would have liked. The biggest complaint I have with this chocolate is the price. I paid $23 for this 8 pack sampler as a gift for my wife. After trying the chocolate and seeing the size of each disc, I would never pay this price again. As I write this review I see the chocolate is on a sale for $16.10 now. $2 a disc might be a more reasonable price if you want to try something special and unique. That being said, the chocolate is organic, doesn't contain toxic ingredients like dyes or artificial flavoring, etc. Quality chocolate can be hard to find, and I appreciate that Taza isn't using harmful ingredients.

Please sir - can I have some more!
This sampler is dangerously good. I bought it to try something different and now I’m low-key obsessed. Every flavor is unique and satisfying, but the chili one? That’s my ride-or-die. Just the right balance of heat and dark chocolate richness. I’ve only eaten it by snapping off pieces so far, but now I’m dreaming of melting it into a spicy hot cocoa situation. The texture is gritty in the best way—stone ground and full of character. It’s not your average chocolate bar, and that’s exactly what I love about it. Highly recommend if you like bold flavors, real ingredients, and chocolate that doesn’t play by the rules.

Not the same as a normal chocolate bar
If you are looking for normal chocolates, I would avoid these. Found them via NYT Wirecutter, so I bought a bit blindly. Turns out these have a very chalky texture and meh flavor. Seems like that is the style of these, but it’s honestly not the same thing as a typical chocolate bar at all. Maybe some people appreciate them, but they weren’t for me and I felt I should give future buyers a heads up. We had to throw our variety pack away.

🇲🇽🍫TRULY AUTHENTIC MEXICAN-STYLE XOCOLATL!!🍫🇲🇽
I don't typically write long, detailed reviews on Amazon, but I feel that the high quality of this product makes it truly worthy of it! These chocolate discs are truly an experience to behold! A really unique and special kind of dark chocolate bar, something you don't normally see in stores! Made by an small indie company out in Somerville, Massachusetts, this product is truly worth the price based upon the quality and concept alone! The discs themselves come stacked in a small, compact box that lists all the ingredients used as well as all other relevant info. Using finely ground cocoa beans (Ancient Aztec word "Cacahuatl") native to Mesoamerica, this company attempts to be as faithful to the taste and flavor of true authentic Mexicano-style chocolate (from the Nahuatl word "Xocolātl") using organic, non-GMO, gluten-free ingredients from certified Direct-Trade cacao beans grown in Mexico! The discs themselves in the sampler are not that big - about roughly the size of a hockey puck - and can fit in the palm of your hand. They are individually wrapped in waxed paper with some beautiful designs, each which lists the ingredients used for the disc and the flavor. There are 8 separate flavors listed in the sampler: Super Dark, Cinnamon, Coffee, Vanilla, Salted Almond, Guajillo Chili, Cacao Puro, and Chipotle Chili. The discs themselves may be small, but the powerful and impactful taste of each really exceeds the amount! The cacao powder used to make it is stone ground - on a hand carved granite millstone as it says on the box - so finely you can actually taste the coarse, grainy, crumbly cacao powder as you bite into it, with the texture and consistency of sand, which melts away in your mouth as you chew! I was surprised how granulated it was; it felt like I was chewing on powder or sawdust sweetened with sugar and spices! It wasn't at all like your average candy bar or chocolate sweet; it was a lot less uniform in solidity, and not as soft as milk chocolate. But, still, the flavor, by golly! It truly was an experience to behold! My mouth was filled with this unique sensation experiencing artisanly-crafted chocolate made with techniques used by Ancient civilizations millennia ago! I was really impressed by the uniqueness of flavor, it was unlike any other chocolate bar I've had! I cannot quite accurately describe it in as many words, it's just something you will have to taste for yourself! Truly special! Glad I chose to make this purchase, happy I could enjoy the experience firsthand!

Not edible as is
I bought the Cacao Puro, 70% TL;DR; Horrible, tastes like choco sand. Either they don't know how to make this, or it goes bad in the warehouse. NOTE, this *IS* stone ground, but the sand texture is NOT from that grind. The sand goes AWAY if you blend just a little with half n half. The sand is a tempering, or something, problem.... ( Sorry, I don't know choc lingo... ) Too long, will read: This chocolate, while tasting GREAT, has the texture of sand. It is HORRIBLE to eat as is. only buy this to use as an ingredient. I wouldn't complain, but they advertise these as "Delicious to eat or drink" They are NOT. They are GROSS to eat. Like eating chocolate flavored sand. GOOD FLAVOR chocolate, but as sand texture, is not good. You will need to process these yourself. I'm trying to blend these in a dish, in parchment paper, with a bit of half n half First impressions. DO NOT DO THIS. Put them in parchment paper, maybe, and GENTLY reheat in the oven? 150F ? I'll go try that now, and maybe add to this review. it is 4 am already, sigh, so maybe another day... So, trying 1 patty in the microwave, 50% power, for 10 seconds, rest for 10s, 20s, rest for 10s, 60s, leave it be. I'll tell ya tomorrow. The other patty is in the oven, on 175, electric oven, it goes +25 F, so peak 200F I'll turn it off and just leave it sit until noon, when I might get up, lol I'll edit this review tomorrow, if I remember, if anything turns out smooth. EDIT 5/21 9 PM The oven thing didn't really work. Wife and daughter say I have to use butter, so I'll try that, not tonight. The half n half DID work to get rid of the sand texture, but now the flavor is off. I'm not sure about butter, that might also change the flavor. I'll try land o lakes salted AND refined lard ( which is flavorless... ) If you see no reply within a few days, it means all the shortening has given me a heart attach, and I died. (Kidding.. It simply means I got bored, nothing worked, and I won't buy this chocolate again... ) So, AGAIN, if you are going to use this stuff IN SOMETHING, where you can taste it, BUY IT. Just don't eat it plain...
