Love the whole series
I've really enjoyed this book series. As the name suggests you get an account of the author's most memorable encounters with each animal rather than a general natural history book of which there are already plenty to choose from. Crumley is one of the best nature writers around and this fusion of biography and nature writing is an excellent idea. There is plenty of closely observed animal behaviour along with fascinating insight into the author's process of tracking and observation. These are small books, nicely bound and with beautiful covers designed by Carry Akroyd. They look purposefully created to sit in pride of place on your bookshelf. Perhaps in the future a compilation book will be put together for the reviewers who value quantity over quality but personally the physical book is part of the appeal of this series to me. Admittedly I bought them at the cheaper prices listed on Amazon as the full cover price makes the series quite expensive.

i usually love this author but these books are just to thin and not as much information as one might expect. Please go back to writing decent sized paperbacks such as; The Last Wolf, and others in that vein. I love the writing and information in these, but this quite frankly i feel i have been short changed, sorry.

Thin on content. Way overpriced. Reads like a magazine filler piece.
This book is very thin on content. It is way overpriced. Reads like a magazine filler piece and looks like a Ladybird book.

Inspiration for your own encounter.
This is a delightful little book by a man who clearly loves and understands the natural world.Purchasers should not expect a detailed and scholarly tome: that's not the purpose of Mr Crumley's "Encounters" series. This is instead a lovely way to present the author's real experience in beautiful limpid prose. Despite the lack of detail, the Badger gives some insight into the lives of these beautiful creatures and is an engaging read. The book itself is beautiful to hold and small enough to carry in coat pocket on the walk you will want to take to try and engineer your own Badger encounter.

shows not only insight but great respect.
I have loved everything written by Jim Crumley. If you love the Earth, its wildlands and creatures any book by this Scottish author will delight and never disappoint.
