No Competitors--this is Basic Training for Respiratory Patients.
I like the book a lot. If you are lucky enough to escape the childhood illnesses involving breathing...you don't think about it until there is trouble. This book will give you lots of suggestions for maintaining respiratory health, if you regain it, in easy-to-understand lingo, not physician-ese, taught in medical school. The author writes empathically and without the detachment that I have found in some specialties (I taught in a medical school). If you have passed childhood and young adulthood, there are no alternatives to this book. That is not the reason I recommend it. I recommend it for its content--covering what in your body may have become a battlefield--or your lungs are the Demilitarized Zone thanks to antibiotics, inhalers, nebulizers, and all the thins most of us don't spend a minute thinking about during the day. And, let's face it, there are only 24 hours in a day, unless you are a "rock star" historian such as Gerhard Weinberg, Ph.D. where you can assemble a group with many questions, any day of the week.I'm not aware of much patient support (in a large metropolitan area) for patients with lung disorders--especially at the mutual support level. At one time I was somewhat opposed to such groups--there are other ways to socialize without "identifying" with your illness. As life goes on and your health becomes more of a problem, I think there is a great need for such support--and few ways to obtain it. For example, there are only two hospitals that even specialise in treating Non-tubercular mycobacterial infections of the lung. Support groups--forget it. And, of course, it is obvious a support group for terminal patients will differ in many ways from those who are surviving and need to fashion a life-style outside of being ill. The psychological aspects of respiratory diseases are as unexplored today as they were 40 years ago when I studied respiratory psychophysiology. Support groups tend to function around a disease entity, where each person has something in common with others. My observations in medical settings is that such is not the case for respiratory illnesses."Ultimate Pulmonary Wellness" is an overlooked subject in an area that the Greek philosophers considered the center of life--breathing. The author does a good job of exposing, in some detail, the terrain from asthma to respiratory exercises for the aging...it is an undeniably important part of the paucity of well-grounded and understandable for patients who suddenly find themselves with respiratory problems.

If you have ANY type of lung disease, read this book!!!
I have pulmonary disease along with a multitude of other diseases. I am also a patient of Dr. Noah Greenspan at the Pulmonary Wellness Center in NYC. When I went for my initial assessment I was told not to worry, there was no pass or fail, the assessment was to assess strengths and weaknesses to determine the program which would be created specifically for me. Even with oxygen, I only lasted five minutes on the treadmill with 1.0 incline and less than 2.0 speed. Noah stopped the test, I just couldn't go on. Noah took me downstairs and hailed a cab for me. All the way from Manhattan to Brooklyn I cried. That was almost 2 years ago. I can honestly tell you that this book is written in the language that anyone can understand. The techniques taught in this book are the techniques that are taught to us. At the PWC, we are all ages, body types and have just about every lung disease under the sun. Using the techniques that are in this book, we learn to breathe properly, strengthen our upper bodies, learn techniques to use when we panic because we can't breathe and so much more. This book was written so that patients and caregivers can be proactive with improving their health. It's inspirational, funny and truly is the finest book out there for us. Read, breathe and relax. As we say at the PWC , YES WE CAN!!!FYI: I can now walk almost 2 miles and this year walked over the Brooklyn Bridge with others from the PWC in a walk to promote lung disease awareness.

Wonderful purchase
Dr Greenspan is amazing and he incorporates humor, passion, and expertise into his writing! This is a wonderful resource, and I am so glad I came upon it. At first I bought it on Kindle and then purchased the book itself because there’s so much of it that I have wanted to highlight and reference frequently. I highly recommend this if you have any lung disease and want to learn all that you can!

Incredibly helpful!
I first learned about Dr. Greenspan when I was searching Facebook for support groups for some health challenges we were investigating. So many of the groups seem so depressing and the members seem so defeated, but when I found the Ultimate Pulmonary Wellness page it was instantly different and how optimistic and informative everything was. Dr. Greenspan is very hands-on and gives so much of his time and information to help people with respiratory illnesses. I immediately felt welcomed and supported with an incredible amount of information. This book is a combination of that info and is invaluable to anyone who is dealing with respiratory illnesses. I like that it's not just about illness or drugs, but about managing the things we do have control over like emotions and rest and exercise and treating the body holistically not just like a disease that you throw medicine at. It's an easy read - informative but not written like a medical manual, and has a lot of humor in it too. I highly recommend this book.

excellent manual for treating lung conditions
As with everything from Noah Greenspan, this book is highly informative, based in sound medical science, with clear instructions on how to get the most out of the knowledge imported. As an IPF patient, this book is priceless to me.
