Parking Lot Picker's Songbook - Banjo

Excellent one source reference for Bluegrass standards
This collection is a great source for picking up a song on the fly or as a reference to recall music I haven't played in awhile. I was initially hesitant to buy this book because there were a few bad reviews. Upon further investigation and giving the prospect some thought, this book is perfect for the banjo picker that wants to learn the music. It includes the melody lines, lyrics and melody line in tab form, but not the complete note by note tab you'd find in other banjo books. In my opinion, that is a big plus because as a banjo picker I want to improve my musical skills. Working through the melody lines with various rolls and riffs to find the best combination for ringing out the melody keeps me from becoming dependent on tabulature. The CDs provide enough sound to figure out what rolls can bring out the melody. I'm glad to bought this book - it will probably be the only one I use/reference when I go to ABC next year.

Recordings are pretty good; tablature is basic melody
The sound recordings are quite good. Be aware, however, the purpose of the recordings is to provide an idea of how each song should sound, in case you're not inclined to count out songs the songs. The recordings go by quickly, with only the first verse of each song. The tablature is basic melody only and written in the first position. Consequently, some of the songs have tablature beginning in the first position with the higher notes on the high D string an the higher frets. This is the only reason I did not give this book 5 stars.Overall though, this is a quality book and worth the price, especially if you are unfamiliar with these old songs.

Nice banjo book that’s easy to use
Each song is on one page, easy to read and follow and will lay flat on the stand. It was easy to download the sound tracks for the songs from Mel bay on to the iPad.

It is a keeper
If you want to learn a song and pick it out yourself then this book is good. It has notation and tab but is strictly the melody, no rolls, etc. I like it because I am trying to improve my ability to learn by ear and make up my own tabs in my mind. The melody notes help me to see the tune in it's simplest form. It also has 2 CD's that plays a short verse and chorus of the songs so you will know how it sounds if you don't know it. Recommended for those who want to make their own tab and play by ear.

Good but could have been better
I purchased this because there were lots of songs and audio cds to go along with it. When I recieved it I was happy to see it was spiral bound which makes it much easier to use. However I was somewhat dissapointed with the songs. They are actually too easy. There are no slides, pinches or pull-offs on any of the songs. The cds also have a very quick 30 or so second clip of each song which is not long enough if you are trying to play along with it. If you like simple songs this book is right for you. As for me I like a little more traditonal bluegrass style with pinches, slides and pull-offs.

and it's nice to have a set of songs that everybody could ...
The old chestnuts. It is being used by a very disparate group of musicians in my community, and it's nice to have a set of songs that everybody could be expected to know. However, usually in a songbook I prefer more zing.

Great Book!
The Parking Lot Picker's Songbook - Banjo is well conceived and well written. It has a great many of the tunes which have become classics as well as numerous other interesting ones. The text portion of the book has some excellent information showing how to transpose from one key to another.I found this book gave a lot of value for my money.

Useful basic melodies and chords
The book gives about 200 melodies with chords. Very useful. Don't expect worked out banjo transcriptions. What you do with the melodies and chords, how you play your part, is up to you. That's what I wanted and expected. You can learn the songs and make your own arrangements according to your own musical taste and liking.

very disappointed
This is a large songbook with all the words and a single note melody tab but not what I could recomend as a good banjo tab book.
