Barren, compacted rocky, clay yard not a problem - plastic tines and all!
I am new to doing any sort of yard work. But, I decided to start learning out of sheer frustration - my yard was a barren, muddy mess. Landscapers were expensive and unreliable. And, my erosion issue was getting worse and worse as heavy rains turned into long lasting puddles and streams. My soil is so hard that I have to use a mallet or a drill to make a hole in the yard. Plastic spikes? Forget it! I ruined a weeding hoe during the first use. So, I decided to bypass the cheaper alternatives and get the grass stitcher.I was surprised to find that the tines were plastic. And skeptical. Nothing plastic had worked in my yard before. But, I tried it anyway. And, wow! Now, I understand why they went with plastic. Unlike metal, the plastic gave around the rocks to press into the soil. So, even though I pressed down with my foot and really worked the tines into the soil, not a single tine has broken! And, it really did create a nice soil bed for the seeds. My technique was to press three times in one direction and across in a diagonal position. The yard looked like I had sprinkled on a layer of top soil! It created many cavities for the seeds to fall into. And, I can see how it could also help the existing dirt to act as a mulch to cover the seeds. Here is what really won me over. I used the stitcher only in one section of the yard, and then I ran out of time. So, in the other sections, I just spread grass seeds. Now, I have a nice thick mat of grass started in the area that I 'stitched'. The rest of the yard is mostly barren with a few meager seeds coming up. I am SOLD! This is a fantastic tool! And, I feel more confident now because I know more about how to do it.

Yes it does work!
OK - I'm 5'4" 165 lb 62 year old woman. I purchase this for my 6' 240 lb husband who has a bad back. We wanted it to repair yellow lawn stains a bare spots do to our dogs urine. We had a lot of repairs to make all over the lawn and in one space about an 8' x 16' area that was pretty bare with some grassy spots. I ended up doing it as my husbands back was acting up. First off it worked great! Dug up the dirt wonderfully. Our lawn was a little damp and while I wouldn't say it was soft dirt it wasn't dry and hard packed, so I don't know how it would work on hard packed dry dirt. It took me a approx. 2 hours to do the whole job and I took breaks. The trick is to keep it very close to your body and do small back and forth strokes instead of trying to do long ones. I will tell you you will get a leg workout! It goes through the dirt great but when you get to grass it's a tad harder. It's constructed quite well. The poly/fiberglass wheels seem pretty sturdy, but don't think they would like a rocky soil. I had some pieces of bark cover on the lawn and had to make sure it was removed as it became stuck in the wheels. I didn't have any problem with the front handle. I moved it up and down and when I re tightened it, it worked fine. All and all I am happy with the purchase, however I only gave it 4 stars because it states "repair bare spots in your lawn quickly and easily". To me it wasn't as quick and easy as I would have liked! Course I am an "older" gal and for you young chickens it might be!

It's ok but mind has not worked out so well so far.
First off I looked at everything on the market and this by far was the best and the best executed design. That is the reason for my 4 star rating or else it would be 2-3 stars. I received my grass sticher yesterday and put it to work today. Great design using your body weight is the only way but still allot of work. If you have a big area to do this is not the tool unless you want a work out. I wanted to patch small areas and it is fast and easy my other option was an attachment for my tractor but that is big and storing it is not fun.Build quality is great all aluminum, so nice for this not to weigh 40 lbs like every other steel yard tool. Nice no slip pad, heavy duty except,Now for the bad. Using my foot is ok but when trying to use my arms like in the video I can not get the handle tight enough. I crank down on the thumb screws as hard as I can and the handle works its way down on the shaft it also moves side to said a bit when I use the foot. I crushed my thumb in the silly square screw as I was frustrated and continually loosing it and putting the handle back center and tightening it HARD. This is really a bummer and a big pain. To bad the handle is not the same quality as the rest of the tool. Because of this defect it may go back unless I can somehow fix it or buy a better handle. I also got mind off Amazon and it had a big scratch up the shaft and some dings, doesn't bother me but I wonder if someone else returned it. I used it for about 15 min one of the teeth broke, but I do have rocky soil. But I have to say any metal teeth would of bent and also been a mess. Overall I cannot recommend this for the price because of the handle issues I am having. I can't believe I am the only one in these reviews to have that issue maybe I am using it a bit harder than most but I am a 38 year old IT guy I am really not that strong. But that screw as tightened down to the point of the plastic nearly breaking and it the handle still moved.

Perfect for the Dog owner.
Works really great. Easy to use. I have three Labs and spots all over my lawn. In the past I would scrape off the dead grass and add that grass plus compost stuff on it. That is a little more work and more expensive.I just used this and planted my grass seed. I followed the directions. It worked great but too soon to know if my seed will germinate. I am going to water everyday. Not sure if necessary. If you rough up the surface of soil and seed and water daily it will grow. The thing is, will by using this allow me to just walk away and not water daily??? If I miss a day or two I will not worry. We seem to be having a little dry spell in NY . It is Sept 2013 and I hope we get some rain. So I will water as much as possible.Works great, easy and fast to use. Also aerates lawn in problem area.
