Tagalog-English/English-Tagalog Standard Dictionary (Hippocrene Standard Dictionaries)

Great dictionary. Entertaining at points and easy to follow. I haven't spoken Filipino/Tagalog since I was a little boy and I hope to reacquaint myself with this great language in 2014. I think this book will be extremely useful for that. p.s. Potential buyers should know it helps to have at least some familiarity with Tagalog when using this dictionary. For example, the translation for "opo" is "yes sir", which is right. However, someone brand-new to the language should know that it could also mean, "yes, ma'am". The word "po" and most of the pronouns in Tagalog aren't gender-specific. To me, this is a really minor point considering how useful and easy to use this dictionary is. Hence, five stars. Update August 19, 2019: I now speak a fair amount of Tagalog. This dictionary was and is really useful. However, I think it'd be helpful to supplement this with Google searches because languages of course do change. Also, there may be regional variations. For example, magtaka is defined in this dictionary as to be surprised; however, growing up (I grew up in the US, but my parents spoke Tagalog at home), magtaka meant more like to wonder (about something) (eg, Nagtaka siya kung uulan). We generally used magulat for to be surprised (eg, Nagulat siya kasi umulan). Update October 13, 2019: I recently lost my Tagalog-English/English-Tagalog dictionary to water damage. I'm getting another one as an ebook so I don't have to worry about wear-and-tear or accidents, but unfortunately Carl Rubino's dictionary isn't available on Kindle. Despite some minor flaws, it's a really good dictionary.

I'm learning Pili pino using both the Pimsler and Rosetta Stone systems. This dictionary at least partially fills gaps. F'rinstance, many times I want to check what I have heard on the discs. Seeing what I have heard helps me greatly. I appreciate the notes on grammar and orthography. The choice of type face and use of bold type is clear and attractive. My use of the book is currently as superficial as my knowledge of Pilipino but I am confident that my use of this dictionary will increase along with my knowledge.

This book is primarily a dictionary that translates words from Tagalog to English (one section) and from English to Tagalog (another section). It also has a brief grammar guide (light on pronunciation), and at the end of the book, a short list of translations of commonly used words and phrases. However, this book is not the best book for someone traveling to the Philippines who wants to learn basic Tagalog quickly, though I am sure the rather extensive dictionary would be good for filling in the gaps from other books or learning further Tagalog beyond the basics.

My native speaking friends inform me that there is no official dictionary yet since the Tagalog language itself is relatively new and still very much evolving, but this gives an excellent rendering of most words and is extensive. For those just starting, be aware that the Filipino verbs are conjugated by adding to them - hence, you'll only see the base words listed (as in an English dictionary), but if you don't know thhe root word, you'll get frustrated until you learn more vocabulary

The beginning of this book, that provides much information about syntax, grammar, etc., is good. The section that translates English words into Tagalog words is good. The appendix is good, as it provides supplementary vocabulary lists for travelers. The section providing Tagalog words and their English meanings is awful. I looked at Filipino news sites and simply could not find many of the Tagalog words from news stories in this dictionary. I also asked a few Filipinos about some of the Tagalog words in the dictionary and they disagreed with some of the definitions provided (and I did this in writing). I was expecting to find meanings to Tagalog words that are used in news websites and in casual conversation and I have been sometimes very disappointed.

I bought this dictionary for my sister who is learning Tagalog. I looked at it before giving it to her, and was impressed with the quality of the dictionary. It's great that it's Tagalog - English, and also English - Tagalog. It is very comprehensive. Having studied other languages, I know that it is invaluable to have a good dictionary that you can reference when you need help. This dictionary would be a great resource to anyone wanting to learn Tagalog.

We received the tagalog series from Rosetta Stone because our daughter-in-law is Filipino and tagalog is her native language. Since she is learning English before she gets here in the United States we thought it would be a nice suprise if we would learn her language. Since receiving the series from amazon we have been pleasantly surprised on how well the program works. It will take about 7 months for her to get here to the states so will have plenty of time to get the language down. Thanks!

Since my fiancee is a Filipina I wanted to learn some of her native language. But not this much! Who cares that "liyok" means "a movement of water in the stomach when shaken" or "bulingbuling" is the "custom of throwing water on people on the feast of St. John the Baptist"? This foreign dictionary has to be one of the most useless tools I have seen to help in learning a language. If I could have given it 0 stars, I would have.

タガログ語（フィリピン語）の辞書は、いろいろな単語集や簡易辞書を試しましたが、やはり語根引きでないと使えません。この辞書は、語根引きで語彙数もじゅうぶんです。 重さは持ち運びがギリギリできる程度ですが、もう少し軽くできたらいいのですが。軽くするためにタガ→英と、英→タガを分割してくれてもいいかも知れません。

Very good book. My fiancé loves it. The book is helping him a lot as he is struggling to learn Tagalog.

J'apprends le tagalog depuis 6 mois . Ce dictionnaire est très complet, indique les accents et offre une grammaire complète. Excellent. Jusqu'à présent j'ai dû utiliser Periplus Pocket lacunaire et sans accentuation et Tagalog English/English-Tagalog de Charles Nigg, sans accentuation et en partie obsolète, c'est une réimpression de 1903 à l'orthographe modernisée. Je conseille à tout apprenant du tagalog d'éviter les deux autres dictionnaires. Le dictionnaire de poche peut aider à la rigueur dans la rue par son petit format malgré ses lacunes.

My anglophone boyfriend enjoyed learning words from this dictionary. It also includes words that are deep Tagalog.
