The Sopranos: The Complete Series [Blu-ray] [2007] [1999] [Region Free]

I just finished watching this complete series collection of the sopranos on Blue Ray, and I wanted to write a review to hopefully help answer any questions people might have about this U.K. release. The top question for me was whether or not it's region free, considering that the product description says it is, and some reviews on Amazon claim that it's not. The answer is yes; it's totally region free. My blue ray player is region 1, and I had absolutely no trouble playing these discs. Picture quality is great, with a few grainy spots here and there, but that's because of the way they were filmed. Overall, this is the best this show has ever looked. Sound quality is also great, with a 5.1 surround English master. The packaging is also great; unlike many complete series collections that have the discs poorly crammed on top of each other, ( The shield, Sanford and son, ect. ) the discs are stored inside separate cases inside the box. Check out the photos I've attached to my review, and you'll see what I mean. It also comes with a bonus picture book, which I really don't care much about, but it's still nice to have I guess. I would recommend the U.K. import over the american release based on price; right now the U.K. import is $70, and the American release is over $100. Super fun show with remarkably well developed characters.

A great cable tv series from HBO. I received the series on BluRay (I know, I'm old school). The show is very well done. The star, James Gandolfini playing Tony Soprano is the focus of the series and pulls much of the rest of the cast along. Other standouts include Edie Falco as Carmela Soprano (Tony's wife) and Lorraine Bracco as Dr. Jennifer Melfi (Tony's therapist). Production is adequate with good direction and compelling themes. There are many "adult" themes and some grisly violence, nudity is also prevalent as many of the scenes take place in a nude bar and the characters tend to not be "limited" by any sort of moral compasses. Profanity is extreme and often harsh, exceeding in many ways what one would tend to hear from "a sailor" (or kids in our high schools, for that matter). The series was discontinued to early and quickly, and the concluding episodes show this. But what a story it is! This is probably the best mafia/crime drama ever conceived. Enjoy watching it, but probably not with your children. Please remember our troops and buy American first!

I like everything about it! It held your interest from start to finish! Probably the only character I didn’t care for which made her a good actress was the one who played his Tony Sopranos mom! But I liked her on. I think it was Lou Grant lol! The cast were all fantastic though! One scene And I won’t give it away because you just have to see it. Was a sceneThat was so dramatic and involved Tony’s psychiatrist! I also liked it that they had a certain restaurant that they hung out at a lot too. It has some violence in it, and I would not recommend it to little kids to watch. Of course, being an original HBO series, you will get foul language and sex scenes and they had many affairs. They seemed to also try to play down the fact that they had side jobs, but they were also out to get people who did them wrong. Just like any other gangster or mobster kind of series. You felt sorry for the women, but they pretty much held their own.

There are scores of reviews available about this series. I can't compete. Let me just say that I support all those that are positive and am inclined to say that this is one of the best series ever made. Initially, I hesitated viewing it. The mafia theme turned me off. After one episode I was hooked. Almost missed a great, well written, superbly acted story. No, it's not "pretty," not overly horrific either. Accept the story (stories) for itself (themselves) and enjoy!

Classic show, best format - no subscription

I got this for my mom last Christmas and she started watching yesterday. The first disk works fine but the second, third disks won't play, at the least. We stopped trying after that. I'm not seeing a way to return these, I'm hoping the seller would be willing to replace them with a working set. We just opened the box, and $82 is a big price for a box of disks that don't work.

Greatest. Show. Ever!!! Great set and I highly recommend if you’re like me and rewatch this show every couple of years.

Terrific quality, excellent packaging, delivery from England to Canada in two and a half days. I have not had time to view all of the discs but the few that I have worked perfectly with exceptional Blu-ray quality. Two thumbs up!

Seen it before. - BRILLIANT

Enjoying watching The Sopranos. Normally I do not like programmes with lots of bad language, sex and violence. This is not too bad, I have seen much worse....

"What, no f-ing ziti?" I clearly remember watching the Sopranos on opening night January 10, 1999. I was immediately hooked. I was equally excited for HBO to release the complete series on Blu Ray. When I heard the complete series was being released on BR, I cheered. This review is focused on the packaging and HD quality of this new Sopranos Complete Series released on Blu Ray. I am both a fan and a collector. The complete Blu Ray series was released on September 8, 2014, in the UK. The series is "all regions." I paid $145.00 US which included shipping. I choose the cheapest shipping, which I regret because of the time it took to have the package arrive to the States. I purchased the series on 9/8/14, and the package arrived 9/24/14 - 16 days. This is standard. I am impressed that Amazon UK sent a shipping feedback email. Unfortunately, the packaging of the box set was compromised in a few places, primarily on the corners of the outer sleeve. It is too bad that other groups don't take clues from Criterion, in particular, with special box sets (meaning, the quality of the paper weight of the outer sleeve). As a collector, it is noticed when these special box sets reflect better packaging (meaning, heavier card stock on the outer sleeve, in particular). That being said, the inner packing was not damaged. My box set is also having a encoding issue. The disc loads well and displays the menu. But after pushing the "play" button it takes several attempts for the episode to eventually load play. I use a OPPO BDP-83SE and it is up to date with firmware. I am noticing a small ripple effect that others are having the same issue. Last evening it took almost 20 to 30 minutes for the episode to eventually play. It is not a region issue because the complete series is listed as "all regions" and my player has been modified to be region free. Lastly, on the downside of the new box set is you are not able to select scenes for each episode. I was surprised this was the case. Here comes the good news. For me, loading that first Blu Ray disc was as exciting as watching the premiere. For Blu Ray geeks like myself, I am always disappointed when a Blu Ray disc is not truly full 1080p and is "letter-boxed, cut-back crud."Or, selected scenes have been restored to 1080p followed by other scenes that have not been restored to HD, which is an obvious method of cutting corners. I am glad to report that the HD quality of this Blu Ray box set is truly incredible! Every scene is breathtaking. It's much better than the first-generation intermediate Sopranos Blu Ray series released a few years ago. I feel like I am watching the series for the first time. It is spectacular! The quality of HD draws out details that were quietly hiding. This allows the viewer to be deeply immersed into the scenes. For example, being inside the HD "Bada Bing," I felt compelled to place dollar bills on my coffee table. Amazing! Lastly, the high level of HD also highlights the incredible acting. Well done, HBO! Fans will be happy with the special features as well. I am truly impressed that this series was released in true HD fashion. If you are a fan of the series, this is a MUST-HAVE purchase. The complete series will be released in the US on 10/4/14. I am curious if HBO will release a limited edition Blu Ray box set with a few cool bells and whistles. As of this moment, I am more than happy. "Here comes the Prozac!" I use an OPPO BDP-83SE Blu Ray player. OPPO players are bare none the best BR players on the planet!!
