Q: Could you stick the thermal pads to the heatsink instead of the ssd? it seems that would void the ssd's warranty. would there be any overheating?

Hello, we use a nano-thermal silica gel pad that has good ductility and is compatible with uneven surfaces. Does not damage the M.2 SSD warranty label

It all depends on the available space above the NVME drive. If there is enough space, it will work, if not, it won't. I am using it within a Mac pro (late 2013) and it just fits in and keeps the temp of my SSD nicely within safe limits.

Q: How thick is the lower part of the heatsink? need heatsink for single-sided nvme installed in a pcie adapter, and have a clearance of 1.25mm.

The metal lower section of this Heatsink, the portion that the M.2 sits in, is 0.5mm thick. And the Heatsink pad is a little under 1.0mm. So it sounds like you might not have the clearance to use it.
