La Vie Parisienne: Covers and Cartoons, 1917-1922 (Calla Editions)

Very good book and it was packed very carefully. Very good seller.

I’ve been collecting this magazine for years. This is a great nod to this publication and the illustrations/illustrators that make it great!

I'd been looking forward to this book for a long time, and I have to say it was a major disappointment. It's a beautiful book and the illustrations are presented nicely. But with all the great artwork that graced the covers and interiors of this legendary magazine it is hard to understand a lot of the choices they made to include -- and exclude. These are not the paintings that made La Vie Parisienne famous, and if they were long-lost it's easy to see why. Art is subjective, of course, but one thing's for sure, it is false advertising -- bait and switch -- to put George Barbier's name on the cover when there is exactly one -- one! -- piece of art from him. If you love Barbier (and the better LVP covers) steer clear.

I had the impression that I was going to be receiving an entire book, but all I got was a dust jacket. I assumed this was some kind of error, so bought it again, but with the same result.

Je reste globalement déçu de cet ouvrage, qui manque de textes et d'explications concernant la revue et le contexte de "La Vie Parisienne" dont la durée de vie a été relativement importante. On a l'impression que l'éditeur s'est contenté de reproduire les couvertures des numéros et citant le nom des illustrateurs.

I'm a bit confused as to how to rate this book. Basically, I like it, but it has flaws. There is only one page of text. Some details of the artists or the time would have been nice, but on the plus side it allows space so that every illustration is full page, and the quality of reproduction is good. You can find many covers and illustrations from La Vie Parisienne on the Internet. There are many of high quality that are often seen. None of these are in this book. Whilst that means that I have never seen most of the plates before (which is good) I wish they'd included at least some of the well-known ones, because these represent the best - they're popular for a reason. Lastly, the cover highlights 3 famous artists - Cheri Herouard, Rene Vincent and George Barbier. While Herouard and Vincent are well represented, there is only one plate by George Barbier.

前から欲しかった本です。手頃な値段で買うことができて運が良いと思いました。とても綺麗な本です。私にとって大切なものです。
