Opening is a nice size I put my keys on them

No,it can't. It opens to 19mm(0.748inch) for Wire Gates, and 12mm(0.472inch) for Screw Gates.

Q: Could i use it as a hook to hook my heavy backpack onto the backing of a chair? Like a purse hook but for the backpack

Yes. Make sure your heavy backpack doesn’t rip the chair, however. ;-)
