The Battles for Monte Cassino Then and Now Hardcover – 1 May 2011

I have many of the Then and now books and have found them to be good quality well balanced books which give a good informative account of their subject.This is a good book but I was more than a little disappointed by the poor selection of photos and the heavy allied sided written material.There are few good photos of the German troops and equipment photos are very sparse.The combat area photos of the allied side are again poor in general although not as poor as the German side.The key here is what are you looking for? If it is a holistic over view of the conflict then yes this is for you.If you are looking for an interesting read with some nice then and now general photos then yes you will enjoy the book.If you already know a fair amount about the conflict you will be dissapointed.If your main interest is the German defence of the battle this book will hold little pictorial value and only slightly better written value.I found the book a good general account of the conflict from an allied perspective.

Don't buy one of the "Then and Now" books. If you do,you run a high risk of ending up buying many of these,as I did. These are serious photo-history books,which allow the reader to develop a new perspective on historical events. A text only book or a simple photo book containing historical images cannot provide the same knowledge. In these books the authors have managed to combine high-quality photos with high quality text,thus creating something unique. In short,these books offer immersion in history.

An amazingly detailed book. It is in fact a reference book as well as a guide book. The detailed maps an excellent link to photos and text.

Written in a style that makes a complex series of battles understandable. Big plus very informative photo captions.
