Not the best but good enough
I wasn't disappointed but I wasn't amazed by it either. I give four instead of three or five because it lacks needed information in some parts (like the species specific section) but in other parts is really informative (like the many factors that can contribute to plucking and the different kinds of plucking). The species part seems the most disappointing to some people, a little to me but that is why there are actual species specific books out there that give more in-dept information on them. This is more about behavior and the species section is just something extra. I feel like I got my money's worth and I recommend adding this to your collection of parrot books.

Scattered
While I think this is a good book for a person to read before first getting a parrot I found this book to be scattered in the way it was written. This book could have been reduced by 1/2 into useful information. There is good information about the temperament of different parrots. I just found the same basic information repeated over and over through out the book. This made it difficult to want to read.

Another HIT book from this author
I have found that this book covers a wide assortment of behaviors that are discussed in detail. You will learn a lot be reading this book about your parrot and the layout and photos are all first class..There are not many books of this caliber out there so if you are looking to understand your parrots behavior then I think that you will enjoy this book as much as I did.

Can't recommend this book enough!!!
I cannot recommend this book enough!! I am going to be reading this book over and over again because there is so much good information in it and I want to soak it all up!! I wish someone had recommended this book to me when I got my first parrots several years ago. It would have helped out a lot!!

LOST THE LITTLE RESPECT I HAD
I have all the Parrot books, more of a habit than a necessity. I'm hoping that one day someone will write a book about how intelligent these birds really are when they spend many hours in the day with a human. I'm with my Macaw almost 24/7 because I work from home, we sleep in the same room, he on his night perch. He uses his cage as & when he pleases & is never locked in.I'm telling you this because I believe I not only believe some of Mattie Sue Athan's information to be wrong but quite upsetting. She says flight is an unnecessary behaviour. She likens wing clipping to teenage sex quote> Presuming that a companion parrot misses flight is sort of like presuming a teenager misses something by not experiencing sex. Some things are better missed. The teenager might have missed unwanted pregnancy, hepatitis, and HIV.< UNQUOTE My bird is very proud of hid wings, he spreads them & says 'WOW'Do we really have to read this nonsense in a book about birds. She mentions an escapee Cockatoo from the UK. She says it escaped to the town so many times the police made her clip it's wings. This is in my opinion a lie. She then contradicts her own ideas by saying after the wing clip the bird escaped again & was knocked down while walking around town huh.. So perhaps to retain flight would have been a good idea for the late Cockatoo he would probably be alive nowShe has a number of these horror stories blaming flight. Most accidents & escaped birds are clipped wing birds with regrowing feathers. That's why there are so many lost birds in the USA in my opinion. She does talk about teaching a bird to think before acting teaching them to be careful. Many so called experts would say this isn't possible but it is with the more intelligent & communicative species so the book has something to offer but if you do buy the book & if you agree with me on the above points please let her know as I will myself.I've also purchased Good Parrotkeeping by Robin Deutsch a fantastic hardback almost 300 pages of uptodate jam-packed information. I've done a small review for this but really it deserves a more in-depth, I'll probably add to it soon.
