Hawaiian Music & Musicians: An Encyclopedic History Paperback – September 14, 2012

During the time living in Hawai'i 5 years I learned to love the music. Once Wall street crashed the islands in 2008 I ended back on the mainland unemployed and homeless, but I realized how my heart and mind were still in the islands and its way of life. I was given an 'ukulele for my birthday and this book is a great reference for melding together the bits and pieces of Hawaiian culture in its music that I do know, learning the history---I love history!--and learning all the foundation of the music. The photos in the center are delightful. For me especially as I saw so many of these musicians play in venues weekly. It is so important this book was written to even clarify what exactly IS Hawaiian music and to establish the important events that developed it over the years. A must music book!

I found the insights presented in the introduction to this book, and the questions it raised, to be more than worth the [hefty] price of the volume. But my delight doesn't stop there -- there's a great wealth of outstanding detailed information inside the book to explore. The book is like an encyclopedia of Hawaiian music. It provides concise multiple paragraph essays about hundreds of individual pieces of Hawaiian music, telling about the composers, the lyrics, and the situations that led to each piece being created and presented.

My only issue with is this should have been more about the music than the musicians. This is not to say there are not a lot of fascinating things in this book which including information on some of the early musicians.

This is the bible of Hawaiian music of all eras. It's excellent. You will find history of all the classic bands, musicians and also some great info re: hula, chanting, various historical persons, etc. This is a must have if you want a comprehensive knowledge of the music and traditions which have influenced it.

Truly an encyclopedia. A great compendium of information about Hawaiian musicians of the past and present. Good discussions of the innovators and their roles in the development of Hawaiian music. Incredibly well researched. An excellent gift for yourself and your friends.

If you are a true Hawaiian music fan you NEED this book. So much info. A wonderful resource.

This second edition is twice the size as the first edition. It is full of new information from the time since the first edition came out.
