Pedal Steel Guitar Songbook Book/Online Audio (Hal Leonard Guitar Method (Songbooks))

It's easy to read by standard reading or tabulature.
There is not much to dislike, and most of the songs are "standards" letting the student hear if they are playing the song correctly( because they've problably heard the song many times on radio,tv,etc. Thanks, KC

Pretty much worthless vocal melodies.
The selection of songs is decent but the arrangements are worthless, consisting almost entirely of the vocal melodies with some basic harmonies. Nothing like what a steel guitar player should play. For example, they include the song Teach Your Children which has some very well known steel guitar playing courtesy of Jerry Garcia. Well, the arrangement hear is just the vocal melody and not what Jerry actually played. This is dishonest because surely anyone wanting to learn that song would want to learn Jerry's parts and not the vocal melody. Other songs distinctly lack the sort of tricky little things that pedal steel players do, for example almost any pedal steel player would play a secondary dominant over the I-IV change in Your Cheatin' Heart but yet this is not included. There's really nothing of value to be found in this book that would actually benefit a steel guitar player.

good cd demo
The CD is good for teaching you how the songs are supposed to sound. I've found it to be enjoyable just for listening and to motivate you to learn. These are great songs any steel player should know anyway.

I was hoping for solo pedal steel arrangements to the songs in the book, but it's mostly single note melody lines for songs that are already in G. It should say that it's really meant for the beginner because there wasn't anything to really sink my teeth into.

Mixed feedback on this book
This book is a bit peculiar at a first glance (listening). While technically the playing is impeccable, there are several curious points:- There is no copedant for the book, although the pedals and knee levers are standard, which would mean it is not for beginners.- Some pieces are only played on single notes, which would mean it is for beginners.- However, some other pieces have voices, chords and the real playing and feel of the pedal steel guitar.- It took me a while to catch (I believe) that this book's goal is to teach easily, with single notes, and then kind of provoke the next level, adding a more complex arrangement and sound, as the inherent capability of the pedal steel guitar.- The only thing that I cannot completely understand is the piece "Teach Your Children". It is played only with melody lines, while this song is a typical rendition to the pedal steel guitar Intro, Breaks and accompaniment (originally played by Jerry Garcia)It should be noticed that the book says "Supplement to any Steel Guitar Method" and, unless you are a well seasoned and experienced pedal steel player, you will discover something.Still you should not compare it with Mel Bay's "Anthology of Pedal Steel Guitar" by DeWitt Scott, which is a real instruction book, from beginner to pro levels.
