Needs Some Sea Vegetable Love
I enjoy vegan comfort food like “Mississippi Vegan” (the man knows his truffle oils!) and faux meats like Impossible Sausage but I prefer the food on my plate to be clean, natural, and pretty. I’ve had great luck with “Clean Food Dirty City,” “The First Mess,” and “At Home In The Whole Food Kitchen” but nothing ‘fishy’ (lol) comes to mind on their recipe list. Then I came across “The Homemade Vegan Pantry: The Art of Making Your Own Staples” and the faux fish stock made her vegan clam chowder to die for. The sea vegetable-based stock also made me miss sushi! I was excited to try “Sushi Modiki” and the pictures are beautiful but I was surprised that the vegetables-as-fish were never marinated in seaweed, nori, kombu, dukes, wakame, or algae to give them a fish-like flavor. I’ll just pencil in my modifications so my sushi recipes are in one place. Vegan blogger Lisa Kitahara at okonomi kitchen is my first go-to on Japanese food. If I need something unique like faux caviar, gtfoitsvegan on IG helps me find those vegan brands. Hope this helps vegan newbies! :)

It's an okay book
Not a bad book, and dont wanna hate on it but it's okay. Salmon as a carrot and tuna as bell pepper. Pretty basic. But still glad to have.

Excellent book! I’ve tried recipes from here and they’ve all turned out very well. The recipes are very well thought of and designed by the author. There are so many books on vegan sushi, so it took me a while to make my choice and I’m so glad I chose this one!

This is a beautiful book; the photography is stunning and will leave you drooling. If like me you love sushi and have taken the step to become fully plant based then why not try a few dishes?! It is not completely the sushi rolls as you may expect - there are many dishes put together differently but are the same ingredients. If you can make sushi rice (which is not too difficult) then with a few larder Japanese ingredients you will love experimenting with this book. And if you don't, then enjoy the wonderful photography and being inspired to one day try.

Someone left a 1-star review saying this book is NOT vegan as it's "filled with fish recipes". If this reviewer had taken the time to look through the book, they would have seen that it wasn't actually fish/meat recipes, but that it's simply redundant to continually say, "vegan salmon" or "vegan tuna". The implication in a vegan cookbook is that said items are in fact vegan, and when you look at the individual recipes, you can see that this is true. All that said, I got this cookbook as a birthday gift for my husband, along with a number of other things for sushi making at home (a sushi mat, onigiri press, pickled ginger, reusable chopsticks, etc). He loves the book and the simple steps to create the sushi. I was worried that the recipes might include a lot of odd ingredients, but so far we're able to find everything required in our local shops. Highly recommend trying this book!

Really beautiful cookbook. Bought it as a Christmas gift and wanted to keep it as my own when I first took it out of the Amazon package. The recipes also looked super yummy.

Very disappointed at book content. Glad I downloaded on Kindle unlimited and didn't physically purchase hardback. Claims to be Vegan, however, full of fish recipes. Would not recommend.
