Can you easily wipe off pen ink if you accidentally write on the surface? Thinking of getting this for my kids to do their homework on at the table.

Rubbing alcohol gets rid of pen stains on most surfaces.

How do you wash this? Coffee spilled over and it went under the pad.

Just wash in washing machine and air dry.

Can you comfortably write with pencil and pen with this pad under the paper?

I normally write on a pad but on occasion I have jotted notes on a post-it or single sheet of paper. With a pen or when using 5mm and 7mm mechanical pencils there is never a problem. I have felt like I was going to punch through the paper when using a sharp #2 pencil but in truth I haven't. This is a great desk protector.

Will this damage the finish on a wood desk?

The finish should be fine. The only issue I would see is if moisture gets under it like a spill that is not cleaned up.
