Q: How do you use this on the dc plug side? Mine keeps popping out of socket, not sure what these red caps and red poker is for.

If you disassemble the 12 volt socket head, you can remove the little spring and then compress the spring with some pliers and it will be much less likely to come out by itself. Just me careful not to lose the spring while compressing it, it might go flying! I have done this to a couple of my cables, works great!

Q: What is the red cap for? Is it just for shipping protection?

Yes, you can remove the red cap and plug it in.
