Q: Hi my sons guitar teacher said I should be looking for this make of string for him but should get 8 gauge strings. would these be the right ones?

8s or 9s will be fine (as someone else said here, most guitars are set up for 9s when manufactured). One thing though, I know it was 3 years ago, but Dizzy Dave Willis is completely wrong. He says that the greater the gauge, the less tension required, but the exact opposite is the case.

Q: What size would you guys reccommend for a floyd rose bridge? The mediums seem to have too much tension, but the medium lights are too bright...

10's are a great standard if you want a little extra stability and power at standard tuning or Eb. If you prefer bends, or have a light touch, 9's are the way to go. And as suggested in a previous post hybrid gauges should provide the best of both!Setup adjustment is usually required when changing string tension on a floyd rose trem, if you find the bridge is lifting, adjust the springs on the rear of the guitar to compensate and retune. I play conventional electric and acoustic/electric guitars (including slide playing), but not a lap steel, so I'm not ideally placed to advise. However, I can strongly recommend D'Addario strings as I've used them for many years with total satisfaction, but I'd suggest you do an internet search for advice on stringing i.e., which gauge will suit your son best, then check out D'Addario for a match on Amazon. D'Addario have a range of at least 4 different gauges for pedal steel.
